Cycling Metric

What is Variability Index (VI)?

A measure of how smooth or 'steady' your power output was during a ride.

Deep Dive

Variability Index (VI) is the ratio of Normalized Power to Average Power. A VI of 1.0 means your power was perfectly steady (like on an indoor trainer). A high VI (e.g., 1.2+) indicates a 'punchy' ride with lots of coasting and sprinting, common in criteriums or mountain biking.

Formula
VI = NP / Avg Power

Why It Matters

For triathletes and time trialists, a low VI (closer to 1.0) is the goal for optimal pacing. For road racers, a high VI might indicate a race with many attacks and surges.
