Why is Tire Pressure Critical?

Tire pressure is one of the most significant yet overlooked factors in cycling performance. The "100 psi for everything" rule is dead. Modern science has proven that lower pressures—especially on today's wider tires—are faster, more comfortable, and provide better grip.

The Science of "Impedance"

When your tires are too hard, every tiny crack, pebble, and road imperfection causes your bike to vibrate. This vibration is energy leaving the system—energy that should be propelling you forward. This is called "impedance loss."

Lowering your pressure allows the tire casing to deform over these imperfections, keeping your momentum moving forward rather than bouncing up and down. This can save 10-20 watts on rough pavement or gravel.

How to Use This Calculator

1. System Weight

Enter the Total System Weight. This includes you (the rider), your bike, your water bottles, and your kit. Do not just enter your body weight.

2. Tire Width (Measured)

Tires often measure wider than their label, especially on modern wide rims. A "28mm" tire might measure 30mm. For the most accurate result, measure your tire width with calipers. If you can't, use the labeled width.

3. Surface Conditions

Road: Smooth tarmac or asphalt.
Mixed: Chip seal, cracked pavement, or light dirt sectors.
Gravel: Dedicated off-road riding on unpaved surfaces.

Tubeless vs. Tubes

This calculator assumes a standard setup. If you are running tubeless, you can often safely run 3-5 psi lower than recommended here for even better comfort and grip, as you don't risk pinch flats (snake bites).
